try mod_log_forensic, which does log-before for correlation with
normal access log when unfortunately necessary; mod_log_forensic is in
1.3 and in 2.0

there is also mod_whatkilledus, which doesn't do log-before but does
log info about the request in the event of a child process crash;
mod_whatkilledus is in 1.3; version for 2.0 is at
http://www.apache.org/~trawick/
