FWIW, I wrote a mockup for this and left it with a couple of devs to look at (from memory, Joe and Madhu, and perhaps one or two others?). Joe, do you still have that patch? Did you have any positive/negative experiences with it? I've probably got a copy buried somewhere, but I'm not sure offhand and am too busy to go sifting.
