Score one for the Solaris folks being around at 4pm on a Friday. I've
summarized the discussions so far in our PR (with pointers to their archives):

In short, yah, it's a Solaris bug. Fixes are working their way through the
pipeline. They think we may be able to workaround this particular bug by
avoiding the 'early' shutdown() call.
I'll try commenting out the shutdown() as well as trying out the current
Solaris Express releases next week. -- justin
