Instead of setting this in .profile, .login etc, it's safter to set this
default in your .bashrc, .cshrc, .zshrc, or .shrc file as appropriate.

We uncovered recently that ssh will respect the overrides in your .rc file
but won't perform any login script actions in .login, .profile etc.
