With no commentary on the website, this isn't particularly surprising. There is a release 2.3 alpha that was never widely advertised, so there's a good chance this hasn't entered the public awareness. Whatever is said on the main website, it would be good that the reader learns that 2.3-alpha's are the precursor to their next 2.4-stable flavor.
