This also makes sense... 3x5 depth is insane if you aren't caching content for, say, a cellular ip access node. What if variants had a single variable, number of directory levels, using the same dir segment length as the general case? Then the typical default flavor could be 1 (additional dir layer) with the option to switch to 0 for sites managing very few variants, or 2 if a large number of variants were expected.
