Or adopt them, but never move off them,

And the other question then becomes... for how long will that particular patch 
version receive updates? Or even backports of fixes that are much harder than 
in a newer version? How many patch release series are allowed to exist at the 
same time?

Etc etc. I think this would turn into a huge burden, and cause confusion for 
users.
