[~niv] You may use what I've been able to accomplish without spending too much
time at branch 'ISIS-988-migrate-to-log4j2' as a starting point.
There are many changed APIs in Log4j 2.x and it needs more closer look to be
finished.
Once migrated to 2.x we may continue with Dan's idea to make it pluggable.
