Yes. If this is null then there is no data store:
((RepositoryImpl) s.getRepository()).getDataStore()
Anyway the exception you get is not very clear.
What about this throws a RepositoryException:
((SessionImpl)mSession).createDataStoreGarbageCollector();
"No data store configured."
