+1 for createValue(Binary), with an abstract ReferenceBinary class (one that 
holds and provides access to a HMAC code, but doesn't know how to access the 
underlying value) in something like jackrabbit-jcr-commons where it can be 
shared by the client and the server. That class can either be used directly by 
client code or extended by RMI and DAVex to allow seamless integration without 
the client code having to worry about the HMAC codes.

A better alternative might be to throw a RepositoryException from methods like 
setProperty(String, Value) and setProperty(String, Binary), when given such a 
reference binary that actually doesn't match the underlying data store and 
whose getStream() method for some reason can't be used to fetch the raw byte
