Hi,

I got the following request for clarification on our last board report [1]:

"is Oak sufficiently different to warrant its own new project? Remember, we discourage umbrella projects. If Oak is simply a "product" then as gs states please say so and identify it."

I quickly spoke to Bertrand regarding the terms "project" and "product". According to him "the concern with umbrella projects is a single PMC managing multiple somewhat disjointed things". So Apache Jackrabbit is the project and the things in it (Jackrabbit and Oak) are the products here.

From this POV I think we can dismiss the board's concerns as Oak is an evolution of Jackrabbit and will eventually replace it in one way or another. They are clearly not disjoint.

Please share your opinion on this so we can reach a consensus that I can report back to the board in September.

Michael
