We are bound to SVN for the distribution because that is the only means offered 
by the ASF for distribution: 
https://infra.apache.org/release-publishing.html#distribution

Yes, I can do that but the script is the same used for all Jackrabbit releases 
(Oak, JR2, FileVault, ….) so it seems it really is a while since you last 
engaged in the release process…

It is not mandatory to rely on the script, compare with 
https://www.apache.org/legal/release-policy.html#release-approval.
