Squashed into a single commit and merged into apache master:

I decided to squash because there were almost 30 commits, some of them
touching and then reverting unrelated files etc. The squashed version that I
merged to master is clean, but doesn't incorporate all the history. For the
history, GitHub will still retain this PR.
