I think you didn't install the complete JDK with X11 support. You probably installed the headless variant. I would recommend to install `openjdk-17-jdk` on ubuntu, if you want to use the GUI. I will close this issue, as JMeter generally works with ubuntu (I use it, to develop JMeter).
