Arturo Bernal created JSPWIKI-1317:
--------------------------------------

Summary: Review the default template for accessibility and honour
the colour scheme preference
                 Key: JSPWIKI-1317
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JSPWIKI-1317
             Project: JSPWiki
          Issue Type: Improvement
            Reporter: Arturo Bernal

This is a proposal for discussion, not an implementation. It is about the
default template (Haddock), not about the server.

What exists today: the default template declares a viewport meta tag in
commonheader.jsp and its skins are responsive, so small screens are not the gap
(see the closed JSPWIKI-835). A text search of the open and closed issues for
WCAG, aria and screen reader finds nothing. In templates/default there are only
11 aria- attributes in 8 files and 5 role attributes, and no use of
prefers-color-scheme anywhere under the webapp, so a dark theme has to be
picked by hand with a skin (JSPWIKI-1265 added more skins).

Proposal: run an accessibility audit of the main pages (view, edit, search,
login, preferences, diff and the page info) with an automated checker and a
manual keyboard and screen reader pass, record the findings in this issue, and
fix them: landmarks and roles, labels for form fields, visible focus, keyboard
access for the menus and dialogs, text alternatives for icons (which also
matters for the move to SVG icons in JSPWIKI-1312) and colour contrast in the
default skin. In the same pass, honour the prefers-color-scheme setting of the
browser, with a dark variant of the default skin, and keep the existing manual
skin choice working. An automated check could be added to the integration tests
so that regressions are caught.

written.
