Hmm, it seems that we do allow "." in the topic name. The topic name can't
be just "." or ".." though. So, if there is a topic "test.1", we will have
the following jmx metrics name.

kafka.producer.console-producer.topic.test:type=1

It should be changed to
kafka.producer.console-producer.topic:type=test.1

Could you file a jira to follow up on this?
