Jay Kreps commented on KAFKA-1710:
----------------------------------

I think the old producer did the compression in the background sending thread
if you used the async producer and in the application thread otherwise. But
either way you have a total of one thread that is doing compression at any
given time. That is, say that one thread can compression N messages per second,
it doesn't matter whether this is happening in the background or not, either
way you can't exceed N messages per second on a continual basis.

Do you have a case where you see better throughput in the old producer than in
the new producer? If so how much better and is that reproducible? Our tests
showed the new producer was almost always faster...

> Hi Kafka Dev Team,
> When I run the test to send message to single partition for 3 minutes or so
> on, I have encounter deadlock (please see the screen attached) and thread
> contention from YourKit profiling.
> Use Case:
> 1) Aggregating messages into same partition for metric counting.
> 2) Replicate Old Producer behavior for sticking to partition for 3 minutes.
> Here is output:
> Frozen threads found (potential deadlock)
>
> It seems that the following threads have not changed their stack for more
> than 10 seconds.
> These threads are possibly (but not necessarily!) in a deadlock or hung.
