Thank for tackling this!
Two comments: (1) this JIRA is marked as "blocked by KAFKA-4772", so it would
be good if you would do the other JIRA first. (2) this is a public API change
and requires a KIP
(https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/KAFKA/Kafka+Improvement+Proposals)
-- thus, I would suggest to prepare a KIP and start to DISCUSS thread to talk
about the details.
