We have JIRAs open for SPNEGO authentication (HBASE-5050) and other
improvements. Likewise, the HBase daemons have Web consoles, protecting those
is HBASE-5291. The HBase threat model assumes nobody but administrators can
access Web consoles, and that only other trusted services will access the
Stargate API, not users directly. We do support running the gateway under a
Kerberos principal but do not support authentication or authorization as part
of the REST operations, so all actions taken via the gateway will appear to a
secure cluster as performed by the REST gateway service account.
