We could leverage AuthenticationInfo caching support built into Shiro http://shiro.apache.org/static/1.2.2/apidocs/org/apache/shiro/realm/AuthenticatingRealm.html
This would avoid repeated ldap binds for the same used in short intervals when we are using ldap back end, for example. Similar cahing support is build into Shiro for AuthorizationInfo.
