All,
Sorry for the cross post...

Alberto Escudero-Pascual, who helped to lead the Kswahili localization of OOo (Jambo Office), sent me this note to pass along to OOo localizers, esp. those working in African languages.

CREATING OF LOCALE FILES FOR (AFRICAN) LANGUAGES.

In very simple words, the locale is a file that defines conventions for a specified language, such as time and numeric formatting, character classification, monetary information and collation. The locale is integrated in computer softwares as OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox etc.

An example of a locale is available here [1]

Following the interest of the African participants in Localization workshop in Casablanca in June 2005 [2], we have been working in a simple web interface to help the creation of such files in a (semi) automatic way.

The basic idea behind the tool is to provide as many PRE-DEFINED OPTIONS as possible to facilitate the creation of the locales and reduce the number of errors.

The tool is can be found at http://www.it46.se/localegen

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are looking for volunteers in the community (specially in Africa) to be the first evaluators of the tool. We will like to send as many locales from African languages as possible before the deadline of submissions to http://www.unicode.org/cldr/ the next 15 of March.

Please volunteer by joining the group by sending a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] indicating the languages that you are interested. Kindly distribute this message widely.
