The proof are our PMC Chairs. Both have been RM before becoming Chair. So as well committers recognize this.

why do people want to become PMC chair?

Because it is recognition.

you mean that's it? Just recognition?!

Yes. I believe it is because recognition.

Related to that, do you think a PMC chair should be
active within the community in order to represent it?
And how would you define being active?

It is not clear to me what do you mean by "active within the community in order to represent it". Why the PMC chair must be active all the time? Everybody needs a break from time to time, right?

sure, but does it make sense to be PMC chair then (during this vacation)?

It's seems to me like the president of the US (or any other country),
is saying "Hey, I need a one year vacation during my presidency ..."

Huh?!

But, ... It happens that we are not a country nor pretend to be one! ;-)

Or what are you expecting? A reply from the PMC chair to every mail on the list? That makes somebody being labeled as "active within the community". Sorry, but I will not expect that from a PMC chair.

what do you expect from a PMC chair in order to be able
to represent the community on its behalf? Or isn't that the
purpose of the PMC chair?

If what you want is to point out we need a new PMC chair, please speaks it more openly. I don't see a problem. Should I need call for a vote?

I can say, the PMC chair must use his hat only when needed. It is more or less a tradition in the ASF, people prefer to not use his assigned hats as most as posible. Hence, using the hats also depends on the community needs. And if such case appears, it is often discussed first on the PMC list. People votes and then the PMC chair shows up representing the PMC.

you mean, it's like the PMC members making some decisions
and the calling a delivery boy to send out a message?

I just know is that there is no concept of "leader" in the apache way [1].

BTW, when somebody becomes elected PMC chair it is a recognition from his peers.

that's how it should be, but I am not sure if that's reality.

Lets go back to our work instead of writing mails kind of mails. :-)

agreed. These kind of emails often don't help much, but as said I think
these emails are useful to sparkle other discussion such as for instance:

"What does the Apache Lenya community stand for"

"Roles, responsibilities and duties within the Apache Lenya community"

More or less we are under the Apache umbrella, because we liked the Apache way. I recommend to read [2]. On the other hand, if we feel the need to to clean up the list of active committers, we can do that. In Cocoon we do it in this way [3]. In particular,

Inactive committers: They do not consider themselves active currently, but are still somewhat involved in Cocoon and hope to return active again soon. Emeritus commiters: They have not committed anything for some time, and consider themselves retired from active duty. We wish them well and hope to see them return.

In that sense, I will recommend to ask everybody how they think is his current committer status, instead of requesting his retirement. We should not do that.

Best Regards,

Antonio Gallardo.
