This has been the core discussion during the 1.4 development.
The original thought was to focus on the JSR-170 integration,
but there hasn't been a time when the whole community agreed
to a JCR-only approach. Therefore we invested very much effort
in our own repository layer and postponed the thorough JCR
integration.

I still think that we chose the wrong approach, and we should
go JCR-only (especially since fantastic implementations
Jackrabbit and Alfresco are available for free). But for 1.4
we'll use our own repo layer.
