IMO the whole issue is quite simple to solve if we assume that we need to rewrite all links that starts with "/" to the proxy url. Furthermore the whole proxy per area is suboptimal. IMO the live area should be not prefixed and the rest just will replace "/" with "https://stackingdwarves.net/cms/{$pub}"; if no pub is defined in the first part after "/" but e.g. /lenya or /module it would be just rewritten with the first part.
