As far as the difference goes - we use "python setup.py dist" (see dist/release.sh) to create bundles and wheel file and not git archive. Which files are included in the generated distribution package (.zip,.tar.bz2 bundle / wheel file) is dictated by directives in setup.py and content of MANIFEST.in. If you run ./release.sh yourself in a clean checkout using the same revision, you should get the same result.
