Honestly Rich, aside from Sandbox as you state - if you do use that Java
function (and you are allowed to) then use that - it is clean and fast -
aside from that a cftry will do the job..
Don't bother using the java statement.

For what you are using it for it is unreadable and does not give you any benefit in increased processing speed etc etc etc.

Use the DirectoryExists() and <cfdirectory> functions and tags as has been stated by others. This is a MUCH easier and cleaner solution than using the java call surrounded by a cftry/cfcatch. I'm not saying you shouldn't protect your applications using cftry/cfcatch, but a good programmer will always write their applications to succeed first, rather than to fail.
