Adrian, I do everything in 1 doc. Start off with a proposal at a business
level, then do the specifications (any tech stuff), then end with a quote
and various extra options.

The one thing I hate about doing quotes and specs is that clients usually
ask several companies for a response and cherry pick all the best ideas for
free. So if you give too much away (ideas etc) then it doesn't mean at all
that you stand a better chance of winning - they simply steal your ideas and
go with:
a) Their mate who runs a development outfit (they had to get in quotes
because it's a formatlity)
b) The cheapest 'cos they're skin flints
c) The company who gave them the most confidence that they could do it on
budget and on time and support it without any weak links (such as multiple
developers in case 1 got hit by a bus)

Good luck mate.
Gary.

I've never had to write a quote before now, I've always worked under the
trust of the client(and visa versa). Can anyone point me to some good
resources about such things. The more web-centric the better.

The ones I've seen in the past have always seemed to lack details that I
think are important, like the deadline shifting if intermediate deadlines
aren't met, what exactly does the client own at the end, that sort of
thing.

Also, I can see how a quote or proposal could contain details that may be
better off in a specification(which I find so much easier to write!). Any
thoughts on that?

Thanks.

Adrian Lynch
