But that leads to another question. On both my machine and on the running 
server (one XP, one NT) the .class files do not appear to change their 
'modified' date from the date of their first creation, even though they've 
been modded frequently. Is this normal? 

Presumably, therefore, CF keeps track of changes from the digits attached 
to the end of the .class filename.
