The error does not occur when downloading only the header.

The Java people know about it.
Seemingly it has been a Java problem for more than 2 years.

I CFPOP (GETALL) emails from a mailbox that contains bounced emails.
I can pull down most except bounced mails by Microsoft Exchange and Hotmail.
It gives
An exception occurred while retrieving mail.
The cause of this exception was: java.io.UnsupportedEncodingException:
unicode-1-1-utf-7;

It seems that it is noted here http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4304013 (as provided by Kola)
They also say that the workaround is "NONE".

Helpful, but I think I will have to get the CFX-POP3 tag.

Well it is a Java problem rather than a CFMX problem.

I have content filters setup on the mailserver to deal with problem emails, such as malformed messageID's and the likes.
It may be possible do something similar to deal with this.

Altho to date we have not had a single customer complain about CFPOP.

Have you made sure that you have set cFMX to use this newly installed SDK and it's not continuing using the previous JRE you had installed.

what mailserver are you downloading the mail from, as this could also be a problem. You may find an option in your mailserver to convert the encoding.

Do you still get the error if reading the headers only ?

CFPOP gave me loads of problems in CF5, so i have decided to use it in CFMX and guess what !

Yes, you are right. It doesn't work in CFMX either.

Lets see if Russ can shed any light on this. Maybe he got around this problem while configuring cfmxhosting.co.uk?

I have tried updating to J2SDK 1.4.2_04-b05 but no joy.

What i do is read mails that get bounced, pull out the email address and mark that in the db as a bad email address.
The problems are only with mail received from Microsoft Exchange v5 and hotmail.
They have unicode-1-1-utf-7 which CFPOP / Java doesn't like.

An exception occurred while retrieving mail.
The cause of this exception was: java.io.UnsupportedEncodingException: iso-5520-1

We love you Macromedia !
