It doesn't really make any sense as CF is Middle Tier - as is any application server. CF for J2EE is still middle tier as it is an application running on your middle tier J2EE server. Its just an additional application layer.
Middle tier in its simplest form, is just a layer between client and database. In the case of web apps, your middle tier is actually a number of applications pinned together. These applications are primarily web server and application server, which may just be an application on top of another application server. eg. CF-J2EE on JRun or SunONE, or Bluedragon on Tomcat.
I know it doesn't help, but hopefully you can see that their statement is flawed and needs explanation.
