If you change 'Shadow Offset X' and 'Shadow Offset Y' you should be able to get
a close-to OS X style shadow, but you may also need to dim the shadow opacity
as well.

If those values don't go high enough, then you can always edit the metadata in
/usr/share/compiz/decoration.xml. Look for the "shadow_radius" key in the file
and edit <max>18.0</max> to be <max>YOURVALUEHERE</max>. You can also edit the
opacity, offset_x and offset_y keys while you're at it.

I don't think that this warrants a change in the mainline compiz, the reason
why we have maximums on int options is for precision reasons, if the maximum
were MAXSHORT (roughly 38000~) then your shadow would either be ridiculously
big or ridiculously small.
