Hi,

We wanted to evaluate the capabilities of the Poulsbo chipset in regards to HW video decode. However, players were not accessible "easily" and/or lacked support for some video formats (containers, e.g. mkv) I had around. So, I decided to get inspiration from the NVIDIA VDPAU work and also provide VA API support to MPlayer.

Changes are currently available here:
<http://www.splitted-desktop.com/~gbeauchesne/mplayer-vaapi/>

This is an early implementation and there are still (visual) bugs for H.264 and some bitstreams with many reference frames, it seems. However, other full HD H.264 bitstreams work pretty well. MPlayer reports around 10% CPU usage in that case, whereas it jumps to 250% and drops frames in non-accelerated mode.

So far, only the following codecs are supported, at this time:
* MPEG-2
* MPEG-4 ASP (DivX)
* MPEG-4 AVC (H.264)

Regards,
Gwenole.
