Michał is right and like he says, you get black screen with KMS exactly due to lack of firmware which newer kernel versions made necessary for KMS. So you have 2 ways to solve it, use vesa for this video card or buy a new one with 100% free software support like my video card (Geforce 9800 GT) on Nouveau that doesn't needs blobs to use 2D and 3D features normally. There is a complete info in the Nouveau site about Nvidia chip code names and their corresponding official GeForce number [0], a featurematrix that represent big pieces of functionality (2D and 3D features) [1] and video acceleration support status of them [2], but you should pay attention before buy some of them, because some models needs blobs to works like your case. Otherwise, i've heard that intel video cards are a good alternative to get full support with 100% free software too, but i don't know much about that, maybe somebody could give you a better suggestion.
