One fix for PostgreSQL would be to declare a function.
Something like:
CREATE FUNCTION unix_timestamp (timestamptz) RETURNS numeric AS
$BODY$
BEGIN
RETURN EXTRACT(EPOCH FROM $1);
END;
$BODY$
LANGUAGE plpgsql;
Would do the job.
