I'd prefer drag'n'drop in a message_list itself. This would be more intuitive. But checkboxes in menu should follow order in which columns appear in a message_list anyway. And I'd move this functionality into a separate commit after main features are mature. And, maybe I'd prefer to have this menu in a separate (of threading) commit also.
