Thanks for the pointer. That was the information what I was looking for.
Yes, that patch should have been included... and wasn't due to (IMHO) a
bug in the OE linux-yocto kernel recipe:
https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7282

Once I figured that out, getting it applied again was trivial.
