Ah .. ok .. i remember this being discussed now.  (we still have to be 
conciencious about the OOM issue though since hudson requires the xml formatter)

If "plain" makes sense for Solr because of readability, streaming, and OOMs, 
then shouldn't it be the default for the entire tree?
