The following would be good to clean up in particular and really is also
exposed to the userI. This doesn't really jive with our new format strategy and
the methods have no javadoc - also, what is a 'common' collection now? At a
minimum, these methods should be well doc'd or marked internal/expert, but it
would be better to think about how we should handle this in light of our format
version'ing strategy rather than the old internal/external one off strategy. If
we can't do that nicely, we should make comments noting the failure and warning
the user.
