Hi Mike,
I am OK with that. I would only add one other addition: "For all other 
operating systems it currently assumes a rotational disk for backwards 
compatibility."
Another idea: we should maybe add special convenience setter to set optimal 
settings. By that, you don't rely on the auto detection and still can set 
"automatic" settings for both types of drives:
- {{setMaxMergesAndThreads(int maxMergeCount, int maxThreadCount)}} (expert)
- {{setDefaultMergesAndThreads(boolean optimizeForNonRotational)}} (convenience)
