my main concern when filing this issue is that examples from the ref guide
(which presumably worked at some point) did not work (now).
if folks think the current behavior is "better" then the "fixed" behavior in
steve's patch -- that's fine with me, we can just resolve the issue by fixing
hte docs to use better examples.
i don't understand the diff in behavior enough to have an opinion.
