Sadly, I am not yet actively involved in Solr development, except as a
bystander. Hopefully, others can correct me if I mis-state things
below.

* You should always start with trunk, which is where active development is.
* The best way to get involved in an open-source project as a
developer is to start by reviewing open bugs. The mentioned Wiki page
has a useful section:
   -
http://wiki.apache.org/solr/HowToContribute#Getting_your_feet_wet:_where_to_begin.3F
   - You should also get familiar with JIRA
* Solr mailing lists are among the friendliest that I have ever
encountered: Please do not hesitate to ask questions
* Enthusiasm is great, but slow-and-steady wins the race. Buckle in
for the long run :-)

Regards,
Gora
