How about
* active circle (existing behaviour)
* recovering triangle-point-up (since hopefully things are on the way back up)
* down triangle-point-down (since things are (on the way) down)
* recovery_failed diamond (things are neither up nor down)
* inactive square
* gone dashed-through square
or if a picture is worth more than words, I'm attaching a partial screenshot
and a cobbled together patch.
