To answer a bit of the above:

Sometimes you may have to reset the branch to the origin due to a force push. 
I'd also do an ant clean top level between runs.

It's easiest to just check the whole branch out of github vs applying a patch.

Anyway, I'm pretty much wrapped up like I said. More work in future pull 
requests.
