I just want to point out that this idea was explored by Etsy who presented 
their findings in a Lucene Revolution presentation years ago:

  One issue that I remember is that there is difficulty in concurrently using a 
DocSetCollector (subsequently used for filter cache and stats/facets) which was 
not designed for concurrency.  You can see the slides cover that.
