The SolrJ code has a class DirectXmlRequest to send XML documents to Solr, but I don't see anything similar for JSON. Is it worth creating a JIRA? I didn't see anything on a quick scan.
Speaking of client-side handling, there are a couple of utility routines in ClientUtils for handling XML, should there be another JIRA for providing something similar for JSON? The two methods in ClientUtils I'm thinking of in particular are: writeXML and toXML.
