I organized the one in Minneapolis as a joint one and it worked well.
We're all "search" people :-)  Just show up and collaborate with others on
a topic of shared interest... or just hack away solo but still -- having
others nearby is helpful (e.g. to find familiarity with an unfamiliar part
of the codebase).
