+1 - I think a lot of people that would try the alpha and beta
probably did not try and do the transparant upgrade - likely they
started fresh (I know I would not flip in an alpha or beta on my old
index unless I copied it first - more likely I would just experiment
with some fresh data). And many that did try that probably just have
not tickled this issue ... yet.

I think we should follow our promise to work with an index version back.

If we have to switch to a tool in the end, fine. But obviously
something is broken right now - either in the doc or the process -
somewhere there is a blocker here one way or another. This guys
experience was not right and it's hard to believe it's his fault.
Upgrades should be simple and precise and without surprises.
