The need to add the _version_ field to existing 3.x schema.xml should
definitely be added to the "Upgrading from Solr 3.6-dev" section of Solr's
CHANGES.txt. The new schema field appeared when the solrcloud branch was merged
into trunk back on January 25th.
And the Solr 4.0 wiki should mention it in the errata as well:
