When it comes to garbage collection, I've got to disagree with Erick about second-guessing the JVM. The default collector has TERRIBLE performance characteristics with Lucene/Solr, unless your heap size is small. Erick is right about not changing anything until you actually see a problem, though. It's entirely possible that you can run with all defaults and never see a problem. More detail about G1 and Solr.
