Right now, when you "java -jar start.jar" Solr's example Jetty, going to
http://localhost:8983/ serves this error:

Error 404 - Not Found.
No context on this server matched or handled this request.
Contexts known to this server are:
/solr ....

We can do better by providing a nice Solr-centric splash page here.
